This is THE book for those of us with the less biddable, independent, work-it-out-on-their-own kinds of dogs. Basically anything with a brain that isn't genetically programmed to ask you what you want it to do... I'd still recommend 'Don't Shoot the Dog' and 'The Idiot's Guide to Positive Dog Training' first as basic grounding in the science - we don't get to variable reinforcement schedules until quite a way into this - but it's so, so very good for actually understanding how to motivate your dog. Anyone who can get a Staffie or an EBT doing agility (and winning) has to be on to something good.

Get it, you won't regret it.

This book includes chapters on different herding breeds, canine health etc. but the meat of it is Tom Longton's advice on training a young dog. He explains how to use a small pen to keep both dog and sheep under control, and how to expand the dog's experience. One chapter outlines problems and gives brief advice on how to correct them. This is an excellent book for anyone who wants to train their next dog to be their best yet. If you are have more experience with collies you would probably find 'A way of life' by Glyn Jones more to your taste.

This book was recomended to me by a receptionist at my local vets with the warning, it's a little hard going at first but really good. After reading it I agree. It's actually a simple book but as a new dog owner who knew nothing about the technical side of dog behaviour, it's a good 1st read. It seems really hard to get into until you think about it, but it tells you common sense ways to control your dog. Until then i'd never thought what I was doing would effect how my dog related to me and behaved. Once you get past the 1st few pages and start to understand where they are coming from it's a fantastic read. I found it really helpfull as a stepping stone to much more technical books, and beginning a behaviourist qualification. Maybe I wouldn't have considered it without this book. If you've bought a book thats too technical, read this first, it's a simple way of getting into the world of the dogs brain and how he relates to what we do.

Carolyn Menteith's book is excellent and one I can recommend to my clients with confidence. Great photographs, easy to follow and really puts across that positive dog training is fun, accessible to all and really not that difficult. Read, enjoy and start to have some fun with your dogs.

This book and 'Cesears way' have become bibles for my partner and me. We hadn't had a dog before so were pleasantly surprised to find that alot of our ideas were being used by Cesear :-). We now have more ideas, confidence and it appears, a happier dog - which has got to be what everyone is after!

It is a nice book with many interesting information in there about training a Schutzhund dog. Nevertheless not all the techniques described in there are the best and some of them might even prove ineffective. The reader must read this book with a very selective approach.

This is a fantastic book i just loved it, it dose not just cover the imformation that you need to know about how to train your dog to be the best it can possibly be, but it also helps you on lots of other aspects including what food and when it should go to the vet and so on but when it comes down to the traing it is very good and easy to understand, he puts across his methods very well. Overall this is a fantastic book and if you fell like reading another simalar book read Gun Dog Training Made Easy, Written by robert Hardy and the instructions by Tony Price
