Narrow Dog to Indian River - $8.84
From Virginia to Florida in an English canal boat.
Join the authors of “one of the most hilarious travel memoirs ever written”* on a wild odyssey aboard one of the most unlikely craft ever to sail U.S. waters.
No one had ever sailed an English narrowboat in the U.S. before—for reasons that become clear when Terry Darlington, his wife, Monica, and their well-traveled dog, a whippet named Jim, begin a nine-month voyage down the 1,150-mile Intracoastal Waterway. But no sooner do they set out in the seven-foot-wide Phyllis May than they encounter an ice storm in Virginia and piranhas in North Carolina. The Georgia coast is a madman’s jigsaw and in Florida the alligators wait patiently for Jim. But as they wend their way through golden marshes, incomparable cities, and lost arcadias, the intrepid trio aboard the beautiful painted boat reveals a South few of us have ever seen. And with frequent stops to dine on sweet tea, grits, and the freshest of the day’s catch, they make plenty of strange companions along the way—from wayfarers stopping to give Jim a good scratch behind the ears to ex–CIA agents and the Good Ole Boys of the Deep South—and discover that everyone has a story they’re only too willing to share.
Beautifully written, lovingly observed and very funny, Narrow Dog to Indian River takes you on a dangerous, surprising, and always entertaining journey through the wonderland of the South.

| Whippet (Comprehensive Owners Guide) - $11.66
Elegant and affectionate, the Whippet rose from his humble beginnings as the "poor man's greyhound" to become an agile professional race dog and a highly prized companion and show dog. Today the breed enjoys great popularity around the world. The Whippet is hailed among the fastest of all sighthounds, though he is fairly small compared to the Greyhound. For the right active family, the Whippet makes an adaptable and fun-loving pet, as swift of mind as he is of foot. The book outlines the breed's origins in England and its arrival in the US. The author discusses the breed's characteristics and standard and provides her excellent advice about selecting a well-bred puppy, rearing, socializing, house-training and obedience training. This colorful and fully up-to-date guide also offers guidance on feeding, exercise, home safety, grooming and other topics vital to the ownership of a Whippet.
| Pet Owner's Guide to the Whippet - $5.25
A new addition to the best-selling Pet Owner’s Guide series, this book contains information on how to choose a healthy pet. Topics include choosing the right housing, establishing a regular routine of care, and advice on feeding and exercise. In addition, special attention is paid to health care and preventative treatments, while breeding from your pet is also discussed. Anne Vickerstaff has been involved with Whippets for nearly 30 years. She established her kennel of Rystone Whippets in 1973, and has built up a reputation for breeding sound, top-quality dogs. She has enjoyed considerable success in the show ring, and she also judges the breed. Vickerstaff is a member of the Whippet Club, and has recently started racing her whippets, which she—and her dogs—enjoy immensely.
| Whippet: A Complete and Reliable Handbook (Complete handbook) - $13.70
The information provided in this book is so basic as to be almost useless for anyone except perhaps those with absolutely no knowledge about the whippet or dogs. However, the quality of the writing is so poor that I really can't recommend it even to those looking for the most elementary guide. At times I was so distracted by the grammar, structure etc that I couldn't absorb the little information that was provided. It's certainly not what I would call a 'manual'. Gorgeous cover picture and lovely shiny paper but value for money, no.

A fascinating selection of early writings on the running dog or sight hound. Two hundred well illustrated pages deal with history, origins, breeding, management, sport, showing, etc. Most of this compilation dates from the early 1900s and is sourced from first editions of rare dog books of that period. Breeds discussed are The Greyhound and Allied Eastern Hounds - The Whippet - The Borzoi - Deerhounds - Irish Wolfhounds - Prairie Longdogs - etc. Many of the earliest dog books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive.
