Big Red: The Story of a Champion Irish Setter and a Trapper's Son Who Grew Up Together, Roaming the WildernessBig Red: The Story of a Champion Irish Setter and a Trapper's Son Who Grew Up Together, Roaming the Wilderness - £5.39

Big Red is a book about a boy named Danny that lives in the Wintapi forest. One day, Danny meets his rich neighbors dog, Red, and knows he has to have it. Red is a beutiful Irish Setter with a lovely coat of red. Red is also a very good hunting dog. Danny and Red become very good friends and face the dangers of living in the Wintapi forest. This book is a very good story about a boy and a dog that are true friends, and this book also shows the true meaning of friendship. So read the book. I'm sure you'll love it!

The Official Book of the Irish SetterThe Official Book of the Irish Setter - £38.03

This is a wonderfully detailed book, outlining every major breeder of Irish Setters in the USA, as well as notable kennels from Canada, the UK, Ireland, Europe and Australia. The only concern for international readers would be the emphasis on the USA breed standard and grooming techniques, although it is likely that all lovers of the Irish will learn something from this book. The language is simple without being patronising, and the writing is fluent and enjoyable. The photography is excellent, and of particular note are the action shots of the Irish engaged in the obedience and agility rings.

The section on breeding and conformation is excellent, with easy to compare diagrams and colour photographs.

Perhaps, as an international reader, my only criticism would be the focus on American dogs, styles and showing techniques. It does give the book an insular feel, and can leave the outsider feeling...well, outside. However, it is understood from the start that the book's focus is American, and if the reader procedes with that in mind, it is still an excellent and informative book. It is a lovely touch to have included many of the breeders' ethics and reasons behind the creation of their kennels - it is a great leveller to read that whilst showing styles may differ, at the heart of most breeders, the intent is to create happy, healthy, beautiful dogs.

I recommend this book to all who are interested in the Irish Setter. It is a beautifully presented and detailed book.
