As a Yank studying in London, I don't know how many of you followed the OJ. Simpson murder case, but this book is a great satire on it. It is written supposedly by the only eyewitness to the killings, the Simpson family dog ,Kato.
I found the book to be a wonderful read, a really insightful look at not only the Simpson killings, but also the wacky Los Angeles lifestyle of fast cars, wild parties and fast women - the humans are pretty stupid, not caring about their antics because only a dog is present, but this mutt is recording everything into his diary.
It certainly doesn't make fun of the murders, nor of Nicole Simpson or the other person killed, Ron Goldman. They are treated very well, and the description of the "murder night, murder bright" by the dog who sees it all but is paralyzed into inaction (I won't give it away) is chilling and pretty realistic.
The opening sentence of Chapter One pages homage to a famous Brit writer, Christopher Isherwood and his opening of Berlin Stories, "I am a camera." Since the dog is color blind, as are all dogs, and lives in Hollywood, he starts his tome with something like: "I am a black-and-white video camera, adrift in a Technicolor world.'
It's nifty. A great gift for a guy.
