The history of the breed had been handed down through the generations at the estate of Lord Tweedmouth at Inverness, Scotland. The estate's gamekeepers bred them throughout the 1800's; it wasn't until 1952 when the complete records were published that the ancestry of the breed could be confirmed. Golden Retrievers were bred mainly for hunting and still enjoy lots of exercise. They are used successfully in field trials, hunting, obedience and as guide dogs for the blind.
